We know it can also feel a little overwhelming at first. To help you get started, we wanted to share a few pieces of local knowledge\u2014the kind of stuff that helps you feel like a confident captain right from day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Start at a Beginner-Friendly Ramp.<\/strong> Don’t make your first launch stressful. We often recommend the ramp at Bayou Texar<\/strong> to new boaters. It’s generally less crowded than bigger ramps and is well-protected from the wind, making it a calmer environment to practice backing down the trailer and launching your boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Get to Know Our Tides.<\/strong> Pensacola Bay has noticeable tides that create currents, especially around bridges and passes. Before you head out, check a local tide chart. It\u2019s always easier to dock or load your boat when you\u2019re moving against<\/em> the current, as it gives you more control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. The “Slow Zone” is Your Friend.<\/strong> The rule is simple: if you\u2019re close to shore, other boats, or a dock, slow down. Creating a big wake in a no-wake zone is the quickest way to get a dirty look. Going slow shows respect for other boaters and keeps everyone safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4. Practice, Practice, Practice.<\/strong> Find a quiet cove and spend an hour just practicing docking. Toss out a fender to use as a target. Getting comfortable with how your boat handles at low speeds is the single best skill you can develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Getting started in boating is a journey, not a race.
